As a consequence of the increasingly ageing population, the demand for pharmaceutical and medicinal products (prescription medicines, non-prescription over-the-counter medicines) is growing. Here, the packaging requirements of the pharma industry are amongst the most demanding. The specific regulations and directives, e.g. 2011/62/EU (EU Falsified Medicines Directive) or FFPI bulletin SP 08/17 “Paperboard for Pharmaceutical Folding Boxes”, must be globally fulfilled.
Cartonboard solutions in the pharma and healthcare segment must be fault free and must fulfil the following requirements:
- High supply security and short delivery times in order to prevent shortages of medicines
- Good surface properties to enable perfect Braille embossing and good printing and finishing
- Optimal codability (inkjet and laser) to enable 2D matrix codes and 1D China codes for verifying the authenticity of a medicine and guaranteeing complete product traceability. PH 0.3
- Consistent quality to guarantee uniform converting, an efficient packaging procedure and the same appearance in the pharmacy at all times
